"On May 5th, eighteen year old Samuel Willie Barnes was awarded the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America, the Eagle Scout Rank. Among the requirements Samuel met in attaining this honor were: earning 21 merit badges; while as a Life Scout, serving in a leadership position within his troop; planning and providing leadership for his community service project and finally passing an Eagle board of review.

Troop 3 Boy Scouts, which was chartered by the Marianna Optimist Club, were treated on April 23, to a visit from a special guest, Stephanie Parker, editor of the "Jackson County Times". Stephanie was invited to the meeting in order to introduce her to the scouts and leaders and to publicly thank her and the "Times" for their continued support and encouragement to Troop 3 and the scouting program. Scoutmaster Bill Kleinhans presented Stephanie with a desk trophy he made from cedar wood to commemorate the occasion. Troop 3 has greatly benefited in many ways from the recognition and positive promotion it receives regularly from the "Jackson County Times", and the scouts and leaders wanted to show acknowledgement and gratitude for how much it means to everyone involved in scouting.
