And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth. - Revelation 6:8.

My Great Grandfathers of the Civil War Contributed By Faith “Betty” Zediker Sweitzer

Written by Staff 30 April 2012 Published in History

Both of my great grandfathers served in the Civil War; Capt. James Ford Zediker fought for the North and Isaac Sims for the South. Being on opposite sides, they fought two battles against each other. To the best of my knowledge, neither one was ever wounded. Grandfather Issac Sims was born on May 16, 1839 in South Carolina. He was the son of Zachariah Sims (1800-1859) and Sandra Leigh Page Sims. Issac relocated to Mississippi and then later made his home in Rocky Creek, Florida. The journey to Rocky Creek was accomplished by using ox and wagon. Issac enlisted in the Civil War at Apalachicola, Florida Co. F, 6th Magnolia State Guard; about a year after the war had begun. He was enlisted in the service by Captain Attaway. He served in three states including Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina. When the war ended, he was discharged in South Carolina. I remember Issac's son , Buford Sims, telling me that Isaac walked back to his Florida home with either bare feet or a hole in his shoes.

The Beginning of Reconstruction in Jackson County

According to most sources, the War Between the States in Florida came to an end on May 10, 1865. That's when Major General Samuel Jones officially surrendered Florida to Brigadier General E.M. McCook of the Union army. In Jackson County, however, the violence was far from over. In many ways here, the war never ended at all.
