Decorators had converted the District Assembly of God conference room into a beautiful, pink ballroom for the event. The neatly arranged tables were covered with pink tablecloths, and the room was adorned with pink wreaths and decorations. Then the crowd of over 350 male and female attendees filled the chamber and the event began.

Kathryn Jordan, with the Jackson Hospital, welcomed everyone to the event. Then invocation was delivered by Susan Baldwin. A light salad dinner was served by volunteers from the Chipola School of Nursing, Dove Academy, and Marianna High Juniorettes. During the meal, Elizabeth Mathis sang the beautiful and meaningful song, "I'm Gonna Love You Through It" by Martina McBride. Her great rendition brought tears to the eyes of many.

Lucille Latham, the Avon Foundation Breast Care Educator, described the meaning of the "Beads of Hope" which were gifted by the symposium to each attendee in packaged bookmarks at each place setting. The beads on the necklace depict the size of breast cancer tumors as time passes. This vivid display makes one realize the importance of quick, early reaction to a lump discovered in self examination or in a mammogram.

The program featured three great speakers. These were Dr. Helen Krontaris, a General Surgeon/Surgical Oncology at the UAB Breast Health Center. She was introduced by Kathryn Jordan. The next speaker was Dr. Steven H. Stokes, Radiation Oncology, North Florida Cancer Center, who was introduced by Lanet James, and he was followed by Dr. Teresa Goodpaster, General Surgeon of Chipola Surgical and Medical Specialties, who was introduced by Kathryn Jordan.

Then closing remarks were delivered by Lanet James, the symposium Chairperson. So, another breast cancer symposium has passed. Hopefully, the information and awareness generated by this effort will result in saving someone's life in the coming years. Please continue to support "Breast Cancer Awareness" in our community.
