Cottondale and Sneads took the field in a rare Thursday night game with Cottondale hosting. Each team was coming off wins in their preseason jamboree the previous week in Liberty County.
The Cottondale Hornets went the distance on their first possession that was culminated by a 12-yard pass from Cameron Brooks to Amari Banks for six points. Dominique Pittman scurried into the end zone for two and the Hornets were up 8-0.
The Pirates had a quick answer when they drove down field for a six-yard run by senior quarterback Matt Thomas. The kick was good and Sneads had narrowed the Hornet lead to 8-7 with 44 seconds left in the first quarter.
Cameron Brooks found the end zone on a 14-yard run set up by two long runs by Dominique Pittman and Jimmy Price to put the Hornets up 16-7 after a Price run for the conversion.
Jalen Kenner ran for 18 yards with Matt Thomas giving way to a 19-yard run before Kenner found himself on the receiving end of a pass to make it a 16-15 game. That score remained until halftime.
In the third quarter, Cottondale came out with a stop of the Pirates on fourth down and took over on downs. The Hornets took advantage of good field position with Brooks going 32 yards in the air to his favorite target, Dominique Pittman. Jimmy Price kept the Hornets perfect on the night with a two-point conversion and Cottondale led 24-15.
Sneads had an answer though and quickly responded with a touchdown run by Jalen Kenner to make it a 24-21 game with less than five minutes to go in the third quarter. That score held until the fourth quarter when Cameron Brooks handed off to Dominique Pittman. Pittman scampered 32 yards for a touchdown and Jimmy Price remained 100% adding the two-point conversion. Cottondale had padded their lead 32-21.
The final Hornet score came on a 50-yard run by Brooks who the threw to Brady Hill for the two-point conversion. Cottondale was in control with a 40-21 lead and just minutes to go.
Sneads answered with a touchdown by Alonzo Hill and a through-the-rights extra point to make it a 20-28 ballgame.
On the night, Cottondale was led in rushing by Cameron Brooks who had 163 yards on 15 carries, and three touchdowns. Dominique Pittman had 22 carries for 140 yards with Jimmy Price picking up 75 yards on seven carries and three conversions. Brooks was three of six passing for 67 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Pittman had one reception for 32 yards and a touchdown followed by Brady Hill with one reception for 23 yards. Amari Banks had one reception for 12 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Austin Livingston led the Hornets with 15 solo tackles, followed by Will Price with 11. On board with nine tackles was Jimmy Price, with Dalvin Barnes bringing down seven Pirates. Amari Banks worked both sides of the field also with six tackles, while Xavier Brown had one sack.
Offensively for Sneads, Matt Thomas had 91 yards rushing on eight carries and one touchdown, followed by Jalen Kenner with 67 yards rushing on 12 carries and two touchdowns. Veryl White and Cortavious Garrett both picked up 29 years each with Alonzo Hill running for 27 yards.
Thomas passed for 105 yards on 15 attempts with no interceptions. Garrett snagged five through the air for 38 yards, while Tyler Lawrence had five for 36 yards. Kenner had two receptions for 20 yards. Hill and Jalen Johnson both had one reception each.
Defensively, Jalen Johnson and Veryl White both had six solo tackles with Johnson having two assists and White with one assist. Joseph Lollie, Trent Johnston, and Garrett all had five tackles each.
Ryan Cloud was two-for-two on extra point attempts.
Cottondale will travel to Jay Friday night who lost 36-7 to Flomaton. Sneads has the week off before hosting FAMU on September 8.
