The Marianna Varsity Cheerleaders attended NCA Camp at The Palms of Destin this past weekend and walked away with new ideas and ready for the sidelines of Friday Night Lights. During the four-day camp, they learned new cheers, chants, dances, and stunts from NCA experienced cheer instructors. They bonded with their new squad members, moving up from junior varsity, and adjusted from the loss of their senior members from last year.
They shined on the competition floor and their efforts did not go unnoticed. For the first time in recent history, cheer sponsor and coach Maria Long’s entire squad was nominated for All-American in either jumps, motions, tumbling, or leadership.
This year’s squad is Kiara White, Jada Holden, Maggie Larkin, Ellery Glass, Alyson James, Lauren Martin, Malloy Dykes, Hannah Nobles, Lily Evans, NyAsia Nix, Mallory Barber, Shelley Dryden, Rhianon McCroan, Imani Williams, Allianne Bryan, Rylie Kish, Devon Jernigan, and Iyanna Sams. For All-American tryouts, the material that the girls had to perform was three stamina jumps, camp cheers, and tumbling, if they chose to. The NCA staff looked at their spiriting, enthusiasm, motions, and execution of cheer to determine who made the squad based on scoring.
Making the All-American final cut was Hannah Nobles, Ellery Glass, Lily Evans, Jada Holden, Shelley Dryden, Alyson James, and Kiara White.
At the end of the camp, one Marianna High Cheerleader was approached by the NCA staff to possibly join their staff after graduation. Long said that Senior Mallory Dykes was invited by NCA to join their staff. She says, “There are other steps to complete in the application process, however it was a big honor to be noticed and recognized among others for her skills. She was among other seniors from other squads to be approached.”
The cheerleaders received one excellent ribbon on day one of camp for chant, and four superior ribbons throughout camp for cheers and chant. Their camp buddy Prater, NCA Staff, commented on how amazing the squad looked each day at camp. Long said that Prater said, “The girls made her proud.” The girls did team bonding techniques and had a luau day at the Lagoon Pool to continue team bonding. Long says, “It was an amazing camp and they all had a blast.”
The squad will be on the sidelines for the Bulldogs on Friday night along courtside during basketball season.
Good luck to the Bulldogs varsity squad this year.
