Marissa Baxter – Making strides on the Diamond and in the classroom

  • Written by
Marissa Baxter Marissa Baxter Contributed

Marissa Baxter is a 16-year old sophomore at Sneads High School who has been a friend to the diamond since she was four years old when she stepped on the tee ball field.  Twelve years later her love for the game is stronger than ever.

Her talents off the field of softball and track are equally impressive in the classroom where she maintains a 3.9 GPA (grade point average).  She is a member of BETA and FCA (Fellow Christian Athletes).  She is active in Salem Weslyn Church in Sneads, where she assists with Vacation Bible School.  Her favorite subject is English and reading and her favorite teacher is Coach Johnson (Kelvin) who teaches physical science.  About Johnson, Marissa says, “He is really funny but makes learning fun.”

Her favorite game, “It would have to be Holmes County in Holmes County last year.  It was a close game and we stayed fired up, we were pumped the whole game and played a really good game till the end.  We won 2-1.”

Marissa gives credit to her coaches, Ken Baggett, Mr. Jerry Dean, and Coach Tony Gurganus at Grand Ridge as well as Coach Johnson, and Coach Graham (Shawn) at Sneads High School for all of their help in encouraging her along the way.

She was the recipient of the Eddie Childs Award in eighth grade and was Female Athlete of the Year.  She has been named A Wild Hair Player of the Week, Rookie of the year in ninth grade as a member of the varsity softball team at Sneads High School.

Coach Shawn Graham has high praise for Marissa, “Marissa is a great student and a hard worker in everything she does.  She is a solid player that never gets too emotional.  She is very coachable and her parents have done a great job.”

Principal John Shouse is short and to the point, “She is really a great kid.”

Sneads teacher Laura Carrasquilo is impressed with Marissa, “Marissa Baxter is an intelligent young lady who is always eager to learn.  She has a wonderful sense of humor and always brightens up my day.  Super polite and well spoken.”

She is the daughter of Michael and Melinda Baxter and has one brother, McClain who is 12 and plays baseball and football at GRMS.

Congratulations to Marissa Baxter on a job well done from the TIMES.
