The Marianna Bullpups opened their season at home with a 6-2 win over Seminole County last Thursday evening. The Bullpups host their home games at Optimist Park and despite catastrophic damage to the facility by Hurricane Michael, Marianna Parks and Recreation Department had the field in tip top shape for the home opener. The Bullpups got three solid innings of no-hit baseball from Trevor Medlin, with Griffin Tucker and Ty’keise Facion taking care of the final three innings
Medlin got the starting nod on the hill for the Bullpups in their season opener and he didn’t disappoint. Medlin faced 10 batters in three innings, throwing 31 strikes to only 13 balls, allowed no runs, issued one walk with the batter not reaching past first base and fanned eight batters. Griffin Tucker came on in relief, went one-third of an inning, gave up two runs on one hit and two walks before giving way to Ty’keise Facion. Facion went two and two-thirds inning, allowed no runs on two hits, four walks and fanned five batters.
Marianna picked up their first run in the bottom of the first inning when last year’s slugger Giovanni Scott singled, stole second and third before taking home on a stolen base. JD Taylor brought the power with a double and moved to third on a single by Trevor Medlin who showed he was a National League qualifying pitcher at the plate. A strikeout was followed by a walk to Gavin Byrd but a groundout ended the inning.
The Bullpups added another run in the second inning when Ruben Mayes singled with one out and scored on a standup triple by Giovanni Scott. A flyout and a ground out ended the inning with one on base. The Bullpups went quietly in the third inning, three up, three down.
The final four runs came in the fourth inning when Cameron Odom led off with a walk and moved to second with one out on a single by Giovanni Scott. JD Taylor picked up his first RBI of the season on a single that scored Odom. Trevor Medlin tripled to pick up a pair of RBIs and scored on a passed ball with Griffin Tucker at the plate. Tucker drew a walk but a strikeout ended the inning. It was a one, two, three-inning for the Bullpups in the final fifth inning.
