Marianna uses holiday break for a 69-52 winWritten by Shelia Mader
The Marianna High Bulldogs basketball team traveled to Lee County last week to take on the Trojans and the ride home on the yellow dog was a happier one with a 69-52 victory. Marianna had a monster third quarter, posting 30 points to secure their victory.
Marianna took the first quarter 18-12 behind seven points from Tavis Grooms and five from Ahmaad Johnson. Both players nailed a three to boost their stats. The second quarter was a little less offense for the Bulldogs with Lee County outscoring Marianna 12-9. James Davis led Marianna with four points, followed by JJ Jackson with three points. At the half, it was Marianna with a 27-24 lead.
Marianna turned it up in the third quarter, posting 30 points while their defense held the Trojans to 15 points, making it a 57-39 lead with one quarter to go. Marianna was propelled by Ahmaad Johnson with nine points, followed by Keegan Jones with eight points. Stefon McMillian was on board with five points with McMillian and Johnson landing a three while Jones made a pair from downtown. Lee County’s attempt at a rally fell short in the final quarter, with Marianna taking the win.
The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Ahmaad Johnson with 15 points, followed ever so closely by James Davis with 14 points. On board in double digits was Tavis Grooms with 13 points and Stefon McMillian with 10 points. Kegan Jones put up eight points on the night.
After a pair of games last weekend in the Ocheesee Shootout hosted at Marianna High School (due to damage to the gym at Grand Ridge), they were scheduled to return to the court on the road at Taylor County last Friday before hosting county rival Graceville Tuesday night. They will be home tomorrow night when they host Taylor County. Game times are 5:30 and 7:00 p.m.
