Bulldogs win in dramatic fashion 10-9 over Arnold

Max Olds cuts around to make a run for the Bulldosg Friday night against Arnold Max Olds cuts around to make a run for the Bulldosg Friday night against Arnold Photo By: Blake Donaldson

The Bulldog fans have an exciting year ahead of them if their pre-season game against Arnold is any indication of what’s to come. Marianna took the lead with 1:16 to go in the game and the defense did its job until the final seconds ticked off the clock to send Marianna home with a 10-9 victory.

The Bulldogs scored first on a 42-yard field goal from Victor Dubeux to go up 3-0.  That score remained through half time.  In the third quarter, Arnold countered with a field goal from Javier Elias.

The Marlins then went 46-yards to the 10-yard line before Jerian Hardrick took it in for a touchdown. Elias was wide left on the kick to leave the score at 9-3 with just under five minutes to go in the third quarter.

Utilizing three quarterbacks on the night (Brady Donaldson, Tanner Spooner and Caleb Torbett), Spooner got the nod in the final series of the game. That paid off big time when he connected with Blake Barber for nine yards before he scurried for nine on the next play to set up the touchdown pass.  He found Noah Shores in the end zone for a 28-yard over-the-shoulder catch. The win or the tie rested on the foot of Victor Dubeux and he proved he was up to the challenge with the kick right through the middle of the uprights to give Marianna a 10-9 lead.

Marianna’s defense forced a four-and-out series and fell on the ball for two plays to end the game with their first 2018 win.

Jeremiah Castro led the Bulldogs on the ground with 12 carries for 54 yards.

The air attack was led by Damone Rolle with three receptions for 21 yards, followed by Blake Barber with two catches for 18 yards, and Noah Shores for the catch for 28 yards.  Marianna tallied 199 yards total with 116 of those on the ground and 83 through the air.

Marianna overcame three turnovers on the night in picking up the win and outscored Arnold who tallied over 300 yards offensively.

The Bulldogs will start the regular season on the road Friday night as they travel to take on panhandle rival, the Chipley Tigers.  Marianna will be looking for retribution of last year’s 21-17 heartbreaker. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
