The Malone Tigers thrilled their faithful fans to the very end Tuesday night.  They were ready for a win and it came in dramatic fashion – a buzzer beater from way outside by Quinton Groomes to give Malone the 45-42 victory over Popular Springs.

The win didn’t come easy, with the Tigers down 19-16 at the half before bouncing back with 19 points in the third quarter to make it a 35-31 game Malone’s way.  It was the final quarter that told the tale with Quinton Groomes coming up big time with a downtown shot putting the Tigers ahead to give them their first win of the young season.

Elijah Larry led the Tigers in the first period with four points, while Joshua Rivers posted a three pointer in the quarter.  At the end of one period of play, it was a slim 10-9 Poplar Springs lead.

The Atomics increased their lead with a 9-7 second quarter.  Malone picked up a three from Quinton Groomes and a pair of baskets from Taylor Brown to round out their seven points in the quarter.

Motivation is something coach Steve Welch knows as well as he knows basketball and motivate at the halftime is what he did. The Tigers took control of the third quarter, posting 19 points, while the Atomics could only answer with 12.  It was Taylor Brown with seven points, followed by Elijah Larry nailing a pair of three-pointers to lead the Tigers in the third quarter.

Poplar Springs tied the game late in the final quarter at 42 but Groomes had an answer as he nailed the winning shot.

Taylor Brown led the Tigers in scoring with 20 points, including five from the charity stripe, followed by Elijah Larry with 10 points.  Quinton Groomes had eight points on the night.
