Emmy Lou Brown Granger Celebrates 100th Birthday

On Saturday, February 16, 2019, a party was held at Alexander’s in Dothan, Alabama to honor Emmy Lou Brown Granger’s 100th birthday.  Approximately 170 family and friends gathered to commemorate this special lady’s celebration of life.  Those in attendance traveled from multiple states including Arizona, Michigan, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida.

Emmy was born in Pansey, Alabama, the second child of Jeff and Mamie Etheredge Brown on February 18, 1919.  She walked several miles a day to catch a bus to go to school.  Determined, she graduated from Columbia High School, Columbia, Alabama, in 1937, and shortly thereafter married Clyatt Granger of Malone, Florida.  Not long after they were married, World War II began and Clyatt joined the navy serving as a Navy Seabee.  While Clyatt was abroad in the South Pacific, Emmy commuted to Graham Air Force Base and worked altering soldier’s uniforms.  Upon his return, they eventually moved to Marianna, established their home and began their family.  Clyatt and Emmy had two daughters, Brenda Granger Dean and Beverly Granger Hinson.  In 1977 at age 59 Clyatt died, but their union resulted in 2 daughters, 1 granddaughter, 3 grandsons, 6 great grandsons, and 2 great great granddaughters.

Emmy was a talented seamstress and when Warner Brothers opened a factory in Marianna, she acquired a job and worked for 23 years until her retirement. After her retirement, she made handmade custom quilts, showering her family and friends with a special touch of Emmy’s creative love. Over 10 years ago, Mike Huckabee became a recipient of one of Emmy’s special baby quilts and what a surprise it was when he thanked her for it one Saturday night on his Fox show.

Emmy is the only living charter member of Eastside Baptist Church in Marianna.

She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior during a revival at Liberty Baptist Church in Pansey, Alabama, at age fourteen.  Her commitment to serve God, family, friends, and community has been evident throughout her life.   When Emmy is asked what does she owe her longevity to, her response has been and still is the same: regular eating habits, regular sleeping habits, and trusting in the Lord.

Her birthday celebration was a joyful occasion.....once in a lifetime.  Emmy Lou is officially a “Centenarian” and she says she is now shooting for 101.
