Martin Basford Cattleman, FFA, and friend to all

Martin Basford Cattleman, FFA, and friend to all

Martin Basford is a name synonymous with helper.  So much so that this year, Basford was recognized by the Cattlemen’s Association or the Top Hand Award.  When Association member Jeff Snell made the presentation, he said of Basford, “This is your go-to guy.  If you need something, all you have to do is pick up the phone and he’s there.  He goes the extra mile for anyone he can, most of the time without even being asked.”

Martin has downsized his cattle somewhat, with six head now, two momma cows, two heifers and two steers.  He works them with the help of his three sons, Bud who is 13, 10-year old Sam, and the caboose Jeb who is seven years old.  His sons have followed early in his footsteps with the love of the outdoors, cattle, 4H and FFA.  Martin is quick to tell you that although he’s downsized considerably with his cattle numbers, “I’m not in the cow business but I’m using cows to raise kids.”

All three of his sons are involved in the 4H Livestock Club or FFA through Marianna Middle School.

Albert Milton has known Basford for more years than he cares to remember says of Basford, “Martin is a class act and is a great guy.  He will do anything for anybody and is a great source of information for just about anything you need to know. I can’t tell you how many times, I knew someone that needed information on something and Martin was the man.”

Long time Cattlemen’s Association member Ken Godfrey reiterated much of the same, “Martin is always offering a hand to everyone. He pulls some long hours at 4H events, the Fed Cattle Shows, anywhere there are kids and cattle, he’s there and he’s working.  You won’t find a better man to help you out.”

Martin is an investigator with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, and is married to Tiffany Basford, a teacher at Marianna High School.
