West End Development Stakeholder Committee holds first meeting

The first meeting of the West End Development Stakeholder Committee was held Wednesday, January 18 at the Agriculture Center on Penn Avenue, Marianna.

The group was formed in the interests of collecting community insight and formulating a comprehensive development plan for the Marianna West End area. The group is not a policy making body. The objective of the group is to provide feedback and support to the governmental agencies as well as the private groups involved as they make their own decisions about the revitalization of the West End of Marianna.   They are committed to revitalizing a once thriving part of Marianna that has in recent years declined desperately.

The City of Marianna, Jackson County, NAACP, business owners, Jackson County Development Council, property owners, and residents plan to work together in shaping a development plan that aligns with the aims of the West End Community, the City, and the County.

Representatives from each of the areas mentioned convened Wednesday to share ideas, develop consensus and begin the process of developing a joint vision for moving forward. Brief presentations were made to help inform the group about initiatives already underway and others to consider for support.

Opportunities for seeking legislative support were discussed. Several participants offered additional information about how best to proceed. The group adjourned with the understanding that a number of individual and small group consultations will take place before convening again.

The group wishes to express its gratitude to the County and the Agriculture Center employees who graciously provided the meeting space and audio visual assistance.
