Lady Bulldogs claim district championship

The Marianna High School Lady Bulldogs are district champs for the fifth time in eight years. They have twice been runner up with seven of eight appearances in the playoffs under veteran coach Scott Wiggins. Wiggins takes little credit for the success of his teams over the last eight years, handing it to his players, their supporters and his assistant coaches.

For the championship game, Wiggins went with his ace in the circle, Chloe Temples who was on her game, allowing just one run on one hit, six walks, and nine strikeouts.

Marianna outscored Godby 3-1 in the first inning.  With one out, Deana Holland singled and stole second before scoring when Chloe Temples landed on second compliments of a Godby error. Temples scored with two outs on a double by Sydnee Goodson who scored when Kennedy Harris reached on an error. A groundout ended the inning.

The Lady Bulldogs came up empty on the scoreboard in the second inning despite having three base runners in the inning. Anni Beebe reached on an error and moved to second when Jayden Sorey was hit by a pitch. A fielder’s choice got Beebe going to third before Deana Holland was hit by a pitch to reload the bases. Another fielder’s choice got the lead runner out with a third fielder’s choice ending the inning.

Marianna added a pair of runs in the third inning to go up 5-1 over Godby. With one out, Kennedy Harris reached first safely on an error and moved to third when a second error allowed Ashtyn Jeter to land on first. The domino affect took its toll on the Lady Cougars when Anni Beebe took advantage of the third Godby error to land safely on first with Harris scoring on the play. Another fielder’s choice allowed Jeter to score before the final out was made.

Marianna added one run in the fourth inning when Gabby Bess reached on an error and moved to second on the play. A sacrifice by Sydnee Goodson moved Bess to third with Kennedy Harris scoring her on a sac to short.

The Lady Bulldogs added five runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game away. Anni Beebe started things off with a single and moved to second on a single by Jayden Sorey. Lauren Brock tripled home a pair of runs before scoring on a scorcher by Deana Holland. Holland stole second and moved to third on a sac by Chloe Temples. Gabby Bess doubled home Holland before moving to third on a passed ball and scoring on a single by Sydnee Goodson for the final run of the game.  The game was called on the 10-run mercy rule with Marianna celebrating yet another district championship!
