SNEADS SOFTBALL TEAM WINS DISTRICT Featured

SNEADS SOFTBALL TEAM WINS DISTRICT

The Sneads Lady Pirates are district champs and what a ride it has been. The team was hungry for a championship and it showed in every game. They last claimed the district 1A District 2 title three years ago but this year, they were in it to win it from the very first game of the season. They went through district like wind in a tornado in claim the prestigious title.  Sneads ran over Blountstown 21-1 to get to the district game against Holmes County. The battle was real with Sneads falling behind 2-1 in the second inning before trailing 3-1 midway through the fourth inning.   The Lady Pirate offense came to life in the fourth inning to plate three runs and take a 4-3 lead.  That was all it would take but the Lady Pirates added an insurance run in the fifth for good measure, securing the 5-3 win and claiming the district championship.

For the title game, coach Shawn Graham went with his ace, Marissa Baxter who didn’t disappoint. Baxter went the distance of seven innings, gave up three runs, with just two of those earned, on six hits, four walks and fanned three batters.

Sneads scored one run in the bottom of the first inning when Abby Perkins led off with a walk and went to third on back-to-back passed balls. With one out, a single by Marissa Baxter scored Perkins before the next two outs ended the inning.

Holmes County answered with two in the top of the second. Kiara Garrett led this off by taking one for the team to reach first safely. Najah Dudley followed suit when she was hit by a pitch with one out but a pair of outs ended the inning with runners left on first and third.

Sneads was three up, three down in the third inning.  In the fourth inning, Sneads battled from being down 3-1 to take a 4-3 lead. Ayleen Faria drew a leadoff walk with Najah Dudley reaching on a Holmes County error. A wild pitch moved both runners to scoring position. A wild pitch scored Faria before a two-out double by Abby Perkins scored Garrett and Dudley.  Michaela Edenfield drew a walk but a flyout to right field ended the inning.

Sneads picked up their final run in the fifth inning. Abbie McIntosh reached on an error to get things going and moved to second when Ayleen Faria took one for the team. With two outs, Amber Clark took advantage of a Holmes County miscue and reach first with McIntosh scoring on the play before the final out was made.

Sneads was three up, three down in the sixth inning but had more than enough offense to take the win, coupled with Marissa Baxter’s lights out in the final two innings, including working out of back-to-back two-out singles in the top of the seventh.

Sneads will host Bethlehem Thursday night at 7 p.m.  Coach Shawn Graham invites everyone to come out and support their Lady Pirates in their quest to move on to state.
