Rotary Honors Local Historian Pat Crisp

At last week’s Rotary Club meeting a special honor was bestowed on a very special lady. Local historian and civic leader, Mrs. Pat Crisp, was selected from a list of submitted candidates to receive the Rotary Foundation International “Service Above Self” lifetime achievement award. As part of this designation, Mrs. Crisp was also designated a “Paul Harris Fellow”, and $1000 was donated to the Rotary Foundation in her name. The funds in the foundation are part of an ongoing program for Rotary in which the goal is worldwide eradication of polio. They are very close to achieving this wonderful goal, since only a few cases were reported last year.

Pat Crisp has served the Jackson County community all of her adult life. The widow of highly regarded Marianna businessman Bob Crisp, Pat worked in accounting in their businesses, Florida Land Title and Trust Company and Ormond Insurance Agency.

During her lifetime of civic service her contributions are almost too numerous to list in the available space. Some of her more notable contributions through the years include:

  • Was instrumental in securing the first state grant to establish Main Street Marianna which has contributed significantly to the refurbishing and beautification of the city, and helped establish the Marianna Historic District. Served on Main Street Marianna Board of Directors.
  • Served many positions at local and state levels in the Marianna Woman’s Club and Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs.
  • Thirty-nine years of membership and service to these organizations. Active in leadership of Marianna First Baptist Church all of her adult life.
  • Served on first Jackson County Planning Commission which developed our Comprehensive Plan, from 1979 – 1994, was Chairperson 1986 – 1994.
  • A longtime member of the Jackson County Historical Trust, serving multiple terms as President and Treasurer. Instrumental in publication of the 1985 historical book on our area. Also involved in production of the popular Self-Guided Tour of the Marianna Area tourist guide.
  • Served on Chamber of Commerce Boards.
  • Was deeply involved in the effort in 1974 -1976 which planned the building, purchased the lot and raised grants and local funding for the creation of the Public Library on Green Street in Marianna.
  • Served on original Russ House Committee and helped secure initial purchase grants from State of Florida. Gives group tours when requested.
  • 2012 – 2014 wrote historical articles for the Jackson County Times, some of which have been compiled and published in editions of the Chipola Historical Trust Sharing Jackson County History.
  • Current Treasurer of the Marianna Garden Club and for the District 2 Florida Federation of Garden Clubs.

Other Awards for Community Service

  • State Women’s Club’s “Volunteer of the Year” 1986.
  • National Association of Counties, County Points of Light for County Service Award 1991.
  • Jackson County Citizen of the Year Award, 1984
  • Marianna Woman’s Club Woman of the Year, 1985-1992-2012

As the reader can see, Pat Crisp has dedicated her entire life to serving our community and her fellow man. She is certainly worthy of this prestigious award.

As Rotary President Byron Ward presented the award to Crisp, the Rotarians in attendance gave a rousing standing ovation. Mrs. Crisp then humbly made some remarks expressing her appreciation for the honor bestowed on her. She stated that she had received several awards in her life, but this Rotary award was very special to her. “God has placed many interesting and challenging opportunities to serve in different ways during my lifetime. It has been very easy and enjoyable to simply ‘follow His directions’. Receiving this award ‘in the winter of one’s life’ is very special. My only regret is that Bob is not here to share this honor with me. He would be so pleased. I thank the Rotarians for this special recognition from the bottom of my heart!”
