#23 First Presbyterian Church

#23 First Presbyterian Church

Presbyterians began worshipping in Marianna in the early 1830's while Florida was still a territory. In 1835, the First Presbyterian church was organized by nine women and one man who was the first ruling elder.

The first church was a wooden structure built in 1840, one block north of the present church on the corner of Jefferson and Broad streets. The second sanctuary was constructed on the present site in 1889 and was dismantled to make way for the present gray brick structure in 1923. The educational building was added in 1950 and a remodeling and redecorating program was completed in 1979. The unique style of the building, with its beautiful stained glass and dark paneling, demands great historical interest.

The sanctuary also has a commander style, which lends itself to a very warm relationship between the speaker and the congregation.
