A "Something for Nothing" Society –

America has degenerated into a "Something for Nothing" society. We now have 45% of our citizens not paying any income tax, 47% receiving social assistance checks and welfare benefits, and 44% favoring the current administration and the continuance of the government spending 40% more than it is collecting in revenues. Thus, the unproductive, unsupportive portion of the population may now be the majority of the voters, and they have learned that they have access to the treasury. This condition is what kills democracies.

Reportedly Margaret Thatcher coined the idiom, "The reason Socialism fails is that you eventually run out of other people's money". That astute statement pretty well sums up the situation.

Let's admit it, America is a Socialistic country with a socialistic economy. We no longer have a free capitalistic system. And we have run out of money to give away.

Somehow it has evolved into a nation with the philosophy that Big Brother Government is responsible for providing its citizens with:

  • Housing (Furnished, including flat screen TV's)
  • Food
  • Education
  • Medical Care
  • Free Medications
  • Free hospitalization
  • Nursing home care
  • Rebuilding of homes when destroyed by nature
  • Ability to pay mortgages
  • Unlimited unemployment pay
  • Free child care
  • Free meals for school children
  • Free transportation (J Tran)
  • Free refurbishing of homes
  • Assistance in paying utility bills
  • Free Contraception for everyone
  • Free cell phones with 250 minutes per month usage

Did you know that a couple of years ago a new fee was added to the already long listing of fees on your telephone bill as part of program called "Lifeline"? This fee (or tax) is generating $1.6 billion per year in revenues which is being spent to provide free cell phones with 250 minutes per month to those with low income. Reportedly this program is replete with fraud and abuse. Do you still think we are not a socialistic country?

I propose that we quit calling these programs and payments "Entitlements". They are not entitlements, They Are Welfare!

Social Security is an "Entitlement". Recipients are entitled to the money since it is a repayment for monies their lifetime of working put into the fund. They are entitled to get their money back.

Our liberal, socialistic system is far out of balance. Unless we can elect representatives with the strength of conviction and patriotism required to face the pressures created as corrections are made, our nation faces a bleak future. We must "Get it Right" in November.

Rudiments: Odds and Ends Worth Mentioning

  • Gas prices are moving upward towards $4.00 per gallon. Many believe this is a planned situation desired by the environmentalist and supported by the administration. With higher prices for fuel, we are more likely to buy a government made electric car, to buy government supported solar panels for our homes, and thus give impetus to their beloved "green" movement. It all is actually a cruel added "environmental tax" upon the citizenry.
  • (Say Something Nice) I want to thank all of the students who participated in this year's Partnership With Education essay contest, all of the English teachers who helped, and the panel of judges. The entries were outstanding and my congratulations to the winners.
