The annual meeting of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce will be held on Friday, January 27 at the National Guard Armory. As part of that function, incoming Chairman, Mickey Gilmore, will take the gavel passed from current Chairman, John Milton, and begin his reign as the 2012 volunteer leader of the Chamber.

The featured speaker for this year's event is Jeff Atwater, the State Chief Financial Officer. Atwater was the fraternity brother of John Milton and Matt Fuqua at the University of Florida, so the speech promises to be revealing.

Along with other meaningful awards which will be given on this evening, the 2012 "Citizen of the Year" will be announced. The membership has submitted nominees for consideration for this award. The nominees are:

Judy Brooten - Was 2011 Sunday Afternoon with the Arts organizer: co-founded The Artists Guild of NW Florida; co-wrote and published a book on the history of the First Presbyterian Church of Marianna.

Jonathan Fuqua - Served as 2011 Marianna Arts Festival: Chairman & co-founder of the Marianna Arts Festival & BBQ Cook-off.

Jacquelyn McArthur - Champion for Relay for Life and actively involved as a volunteer with many other Jackson County organizations.

Angela McFarland - Founded the H.E.L.P.S program that provides after school tutoring and community education at the McClain Community Center.

Peggy Yon Mills - Led the effort for repairing Alford Community Center: raising funds for repairs and getting repairs done. Also founder of the Alford Community Organization and the Peggy Yon Mills Scholarship for graduating Cottondale seniors.

Byron Ward - Active participant in $6 million expansion of Jackson Hospital: Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Jackson Hospital when commitment was made and construction started in 2011.
