Governor Rick Scott Presents Detective Gary Lavaron with the Medal of Heroism

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. Today, Governor Rick Scott recognized Detective Gary Lavaron with the Medal of Heroism for his courageous actions. On February 16, 2012, the Clay County Sheriff's Office Organized Crime Section was conducting an investigation into a possible methamphetamine laboratory. During the investigation, an an armed assailant fired at Detective Dave White and Detective Matt Hanlin. During the assault incident, Detective Lavaron shot the suspect and provided medical assistance to Detective Hanlin. Despite the life saving attempt during medical transport, Detective White lost his life in the line of duty.

Governor Scott said, "I am honored to present Detective Gary Lavaron with the Medal of Heroism. His bravery and sacrifice during the investigation demonstrates his commitment to public service and protecting his community. Despite the best efforts of first responders on that tragic day, Detective Dave White lost his life in the line of duty – and we'll honor his memory and sacrifice forever."

Clay County Sheriff's Office Detective Gary Lavaron said, "I am humbled to receive the Medal of Heroism and gratefully accept this award in the honor of Detective Dave White. It should be known that I am no more of a hero than any of my other colleagues who were there the night of February 16th, 2012. My actions were in response to the threat that endangered my life as well as those around me. I am confident that any of my team members would have responded the same way or better than I did if placed in the same situation."

The "Medal of Heroism" is given to any law enforcement or correctional officer, firefighter, emergency medical technician or paramedic who has distinguished himself or herself by risking his or her life deliberately above and beyond the call of duty and must have engaged in hazardous or perilous activities to preserve lives with the knowledge that such activities might result in great personal harm.
