One of the newest forms of live action entertainment that is sweeping the world is Escape Rooms. The fans, or escape artists, travel from place to place using their skills to conquer new quests. The sixty minute adventure involves looking for clues, solving puzzles and teamwork.
Jade Boyll and Marshall Godber plan to open Escape Marianna in a couple of months at 2915 Jefferson Street. Jade, a kindergarten teacher’s aide from Blountstown, and her fiancé Marshall, who is a mobile mechanic from Enterprise, enjoy the challenge involved in escape rooms. The couple began traveling the area about a year ago to attempt new escapes. “We have experienced the traditional office/study scenario, kidnapping, hostage situations, and recently in Daleville a live action zombie chasing, which was intense” explained Jade.
According to the couple, the escape takes place when you are closed in a room for sixty minutes with furniture and accessories for the theme. Successful participants have good communication, teamwork, attention to details and problem solving skills. There is a hint system of which participants can take advantage and a game master always watching via a camera. Should a participant need to leave during the challenge, no worries. Winners receive major bragging rights, and leaderboard ranking for a month. According to Jade, they also leave with a feeling of accomplishment. Those who do not win might feel sad, but the more they participate in the adventures, the better they will become. “It’s good for corporate team training” she added. “It’s a stressful, but fun brainteaser.”
Currently, there are escape rooms in Panama City, Dothan and Tallahassee. “Marianna is in just the right location and the perfect size with added southern charm” Jade explained. While Escape Marianna will probably not have live zombies chasing participants, the couple plans to begin with family-oriented, but moderately difficult escapes in three rooms. As the business grows, tiered levels of escapes may be added. Room rotation will take place every six months, so that new experiences will be available. In addition, Escape Marianna will be available for reservation to accommodate corporate training, and party themes.
Marshall explained that “Jade handles most of the upfront business aspects, while I make the props used to solve the escape.” “All of our props are unique” he added. “Escape rooms will definitely raise your IQ a few points” Marshall pointed out. “It will also boost your self-esteem” Jade added. Jade and Marshall plan to expand and bring more business into Marianna.
