Maya Boykin:  a calling to make a difference with Little Tots Academy Daycare

Some girls dream of being doctors or lawyers, but Maya Boykin, owner of Little Tots Academy Daycare grew up dreaming about teaching children.  Born and raised in Marianna, Maya took a Home Economics Class at Marianna High School that changed her life.  During the class she had an assignment where she had to take care of the needs of a doll overnight.  While other teens didn’t like the assignment, Maya explained how she “loved it” and asked her teacher to repeat the assignment. This led to her completion of the early childhood program.  After high school graduation, Maya obtained an Associates of Arts degree from Chipola College in Elementary Education with a minor in Childcare Management.  The entire time she was going to school she was saving her money and working at different daycare establishments in town, including Kids Kingdom, Little Blessings Academy and Learning Tree.  Her position at Learning Tree allowed her to assist with management of the daycare center when the directors were away.  After three years with the help of her family and friends, on February 5, 2018, Maya opened Little Tots Academy Daycare.

Currently, Maya has thirteen students between the ages of one and four enrolled.  However, she is already planning an expansion to take place this summer.  The center is open from 5:30 am to 5:30 pm at 4373 Pearl Street.  Children are served breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack. Summer activities will include outside water play.  Maya uses the Baby Doll Curriculum for the younger children and the Beyond Centers and Circle Time Curriculum for the older toddlers.  Music in the forms of singing and dance are used to assist with teaching.  Maya added “we’re all about learning . . . learning is the key” Maya went on to share how she loves to see the faces of the children “light up” when they learn new concepts and skills.  Maya’s staff are happy to work with parents on toilet training and older children can ride the school bus to her location for afternoon care.  Summer care of older children is also available.  In the next couple of weeks Maya will be opening registration for a “Pre-Kindergarten Program” to prepare four year olds for school.  

Maya wants to make a difference in the community and is already planning a second campus that will feature 24 hour a day service with two shifts for parents who work nights.  To learn more about Little Tots Academy, call (850) 372-4280.
